The Man Inside Dame Edna (2008)

60'
Channel 4
Director: Adrian Sibley
Executive Producer: Adam Bullmore

For 50 years Barry Humphries’ comic creations have lampooned, exported and celebrated Australian culture in equal measure. In the process he has become a global icon of modern comedy and the land of his birth. ‘The Man Inside Dame Edna’ follows Humphries on his 2007 tour of Australia’s major cities, and takes him back to locations of his childhood and early adulthood. As Humphries revisits the streets where he grew up, the public school he attended and the theatrical archives where fifty years of props and costumes are stored, one of the most brilliant comic talents of the TV age is transported back to moments that define him and his characters. Revealing, irreverent and at times contradictory the film is the most intimate portrait to date of a profoundly private man.
